Rethinking Thinking [5:32]

This great video introduces the “Ladder of Inference” model as a way to more clearly think about the people we interact with.  It starts with simply describing the process of how we make sense of information, form beliefs, and then take actions.  Understanding this process, the video argues, allows us to step in at different wrung in the ladder in order to take control of our assumptions and emotional reactions.

Discussion Questions

  • What are the different steps on the Ladder of Inference?
  • Think of a time where you jumped to conclusions or had an emotional outburst before you thought about it.  At what wrung could you have stepped in to change the outcome?
  • Why is it important that we sometimes ‘short circuit’ our ladders?
  • What would happen if we never reflected on how we came to the conclusions we did?

Keywords: psychology, cognitive biases, critical thinking, rationality, emotional intelligence, emotions, assumptions, beliefs,
