Nonviolence and the Peace Movement [12:48]

Description

Crash Course covers the peace movement in the 20th Century, a topic vastly under represented in history textbooks and the public consciousness.  Many are surprised to learn that this past century was the most peaceful in human history.  The video discusses Leo Tolstoy, Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King Jr., and other leaders, as well as specific movements in South Asia, Africa, Europe, and America.

Discussion Questions

  • What are some of the historical Christian and Hindu roots of nonviolence the video discusses?
  • Why do you think nonviolent protests are often so much more powerful than violent ones?
  • If MLK or Gandhi had used violence, do you think they would have succeeded?  Why or why not?
  • What social and political problems today do you think could be made better through organizing nonviolent protests?
